With the second week of tutoring upon us, I am creepily optimistic about the future of this program. Even with my last post heavy on my mind, I still think we have a lot of positive tools in place to succeed. After all, This is the 33rd consecutive September in which a tutor/mentor program based around the at-risk youth of the Cabrini Green projects has held an orientation for students and volunteers to come together and learn about what's expected of them in the program.
Seeing our kids meet their volunteers for the first time really moved me and compelled me to understand why people were doing this. Why I came to the non-profit sector to begin with: to see a difference being made in the work I do. Some were shy to get to know each other, some dove right in and the veterans just came in as old friends, all of which who connected in some shape or form (internet, phone, in person) over the summer... like friends and family do.
I can't wait to see how things unfold in this 2008-2009 school year. Stick around here and check out our countless websites so you can see how it unfolds as well.
