Tutor/Mentor Conference Makes National Connections, is Successful
Chicago, IL 6/5/08 — Last week, Tutor/Mentor Connection hosted its 29th Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference, which brought in more than 125 people from various parts of the country including California, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Tutoring and Mentoring professionals from a whopping 87 programs countrywide joined in panel discussions and more intimate workshops of small groups to discuss the joys and pains of tutoring and mentoring youth. While each had vastly different backgrounds, they were all on one accord with similar issues of the trials of philanthropy-funded volunteerism and service.
Hoping to take back a few ideas from the conference, they did. According to workshop evaluations, conference participants found the sessions, "Helpful and informative," saying the speakers were "well-versed" in the subject and "engaging" to speak to. The Tutor/Mentor Leadership & Networking conference aims to inspire and inform participants of new ideas that they can try upon return to their own programs or starting up a new program.
"I thought it was a wonderful networking opportunity and a lot of fun," said Nicole White, Conference Coordinator for Tutor/Mentor Conference. "In the future I would like to get more national attention and even more visiting cities involved to show participants that their city isn’t much different in the structure of how we run our programs here in Chicago."
Tutor/Mentor Connection will host the fall version of this conference in November 2008 (date to be announced). Spring Conference participants and visitors or even those interested in future conferences are encouraged to introduce themselves in Tutor/Mentor Connection online forums and or blogs found at http://www.tutormentorconnection.org/.
"We want to continue to work to build a stronger infrastructure to support our efforts, which will lead to better supports for kids living in disadvantaged situations," Tutor/Mentor Connection President Dan Bassill said.
